As we stand ready to enter the New Year of 5780, this week’s Torah portion, Nitzavim, reminds us that God’s covenant was made with the entirety of the Jewish people.

“I make this covenant…not with you alone, but both with those who are standing here with us this day… and with those who are not with us here this day” (Deut. 29:13-14). The midrashic explanation of the verses is that every Jewish soul that ever was or would ever be was at Sinai to receive God’s gift of Torah. Each of us is part of a long chain, influenced by those who came before and responsible for those who come after.

At the High Holy Days we look back and we look forward, that our teshuvah may bring us repair and hope, as we re-affirm our commitment to our Eternal God.

L’shanah tovah um’tukah tikateivu.
(May you be inscribed for a good and sweet year.)
